Overview
Austin Water is preparing for the needs of the future by strengthening our city’s water infrastructure through a program called Renewing Austin. As part of this work, Austin Water will install 4,046 linear feet of new water mains and 2,533 linear feet of new wastewater mains in the Central East neighborhood. This project is called the Central East Water and Wastewater Renewal Project.
Within the area bounded by Chicon, East 7th, Northwestern and Rosewood, Austin Water will install upgrades along Bryan and East 9th and 10th Streets, as well as in the alley between East 7th and 8th. Austin Water has documented numerous pipe breaks in these areas, and by installing new infrastructure here we help create a more sustainable city.
For this project, contractors will use a technique called “open cut trenching,” cutting through the pavement to dig trenches for the new lines. The trenches will be temporarily repaired during the project. When construction is finished, the contractor will repave all streets impacted by this work.
Timeline
We anticipate that construction will begin in 2025 and take 14 months to complete. Closer to the start of construction we will host a public meeting, where you can meet the Project Team, ask questions and learn more about what to expect.
