Project Overview

The 38th and 40th Streets Water and Wastewater Pipeline Renewal Project will replace approximately 2,650 linear feet of water mains and 2,610 linear feet of wastewater piping in the area bounded by 38th, 39th, and 40th streets along with Red River and IH-35.

This work is part of Renewing Austin, an Austin Water program dedicated to replacing aging and deteriorating pipes throughout the city. Frequent water line breaks are well documented in this area, showing these pipes should be replaced, and we are pleased to bring stronger infrastructure to the neighborhood as we prepare for the needs of the future.

For this project contractors will use an excavation process called “open cut trenching,” digging into the ground to excavate old lines and install the new pipes. All streets impacted by construction will be repaved at the end of the project.

Timeline

We anticipate that construction will begin in late spring of 2024 and take 14 months to complete. Closer to the start of construction we will host a public meeting, where you can meet the Project Team and ask questions!
