Bicycle Program
Austin's Bicycle Program works to make Austin an even greater city for biking. Our work is guided by the 2023 Austin Bicycle Plan. Austin is following this plan to become a city with a comprehensive bike network—and a community where people of all ages and abilities experience biking as safe, comfortable, convenient, and fun. We hope this website will encourage you to try biking for short trips around town. Biking is a “green” and affordable mode of transportation—and a fun way to get daily fitness outdoors. Austin is already designated a Gold-Level Bicycle-Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.

We work to make Austin a safe, friendly and desirable place for everyone as we improve city streets using a Complete Streets approach.
Community Benefits
Our work is grounded in the community values expressed in the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan. We advance biking and walking as a means to advance broad, community-based values and goals.
- Improve safety: Reduce injuries and deaths on our streets
- Improve community health and fitness
- Improving air quality and climate resiliency
- Expand affordable, equitable travel choices while taming traffic
- Make streets more attractive places for people
- Help keep Austin a competitive, equitable, prosperous and desirable place to live
Community Involvement
Our approach is grounded in community engagement and a commitment to meet real community needs. City of Austin bodies that serve in an official advisory role include the Bicycle Advisory Council, the Pedestrian Advisory Council, and the Urban Transportation Commission. We also proactively seek out and incorporate community input on individual street enhancement projects.
