Choose your cart size
Austin Resource Recovery provides bundled services to manage your trash, recycling and composting. Save money on your utility bill by recycling as much as possible, setting aside yard trimmings for composting collection, and choosing a smaller trash cart.
Costs are based on your trash cart size. We offer four trash cart sizes; choose the size that best fits your household’s needs. Get pricing and size options.
Administrative rules require that each household have a 96-gallon trash cart before requesting an additional cart. The City also requires that customers have the same capacity for recycling as you do for trash. To change your cart size, call (512) 494-9400.
Keep these items out of your trash cart
Keep the following items out of the brown trash cart:
- Rocks
- Dirt concrete
- Gravel
- Construction debris
- Hazardous waste (solvents, paints, batteries, automotive fluids, fluorescent light bulbs, pool chemicals)
We encourage customers to request a collection for dead animals. However, the dead animal is small (such as a mouse, bird, turtle, etc.), it can be bagged and placed into the trash cart.
These items are accepted in your trash cart
The following items can go into your brown trash cart when properly bagged and sealed:
- Dusty materials (ashes–cooled, sawdust, vacuum cleaner dust)
- Broken glass (wrap in newspaper, place in box and label BROKEN GLASS)
- Loose animal waste and cat litter
- Styrofoam packing peanuts
- Needles and syringes (place in hard plastic or metal container with tightly secured lid)
Collection guidelines
- Place your trash cart at the curb by 5:30 a.m. on your collection day. (The set-out time has been shifted to an hour earlier to minimize workers' exposure to the extreme summer heat.)
- Place trash, recyclables and composting five feet apart to allow our automated trucks to collect materials safely and efficiently.
- Extra bags of trash that do not fit in your trash cart with the lid closed must be placed next to the trash cart and tagged with an extra trash sticker, which can be purchased at most local grocery stores for $5 plus tax. Extra bags without a sticker will be charged $10.20 plus tax per bag (these prices increased, effective October 1, 2021).
- Help protect the health and safety ARR staff, please remember to bag and tie all trash to keep it contained. Use a BPI-certified compostable bag or paper bag for compost. Do not bag recycling.
