Parking and Transportation Management Districts

How it Works

The process of creating a PTMD may be initiated by the Director of the Austin Transportation and Public Works. Additionally, a representative of a business organization, real estate developer or other stakeholder that is located completely or partially within the proposed PTMD may file an application to create a PTMD with the Director.

To become a PTMD, an area with paid, on-street parking must add at least 100 new paid, on-street parking spaces, and an area without paid, on-street parking must create at least 200 new paid, on-street parking spaces. The goal of this requirement is to promote parking turnover and reduce high commuter idle time. The PTMD dedicates 51 percent of the public paid parking revenue, after City expenses, to support mobility improvements within the established district, including park maintenance, signage, wayfinding, and sidewalk improvements.

How to pay: Park ATX app or Text to Park

Park ATX app

Street signs in each parking district provide visitors their parking zone number and the days and hours paid parking is enforced. The City of Austin encourage all users to download the Park ATX app ahead of their trip, so they can quickly park on the street and enjoy their time at their destination. Park ATX users can enter promo codes FREE15ATX1 and FREE15ATX2 for two free 15-minute sessions (codes refresh daily).

Download the Park ATX mobile application to pay for parking on-street in the district.

The Park ATX app makes it easy to pay for parking and allows users to add time to their parking session remotely and stop the session early.

Text to Park

Text “parking” to 30843 and follow prompts to start a parking session.

Residential Permit Parking

Some Parking and Transportation Management Districts include Residential Permit Parking zones.  Please visit the Residential Permit Parking site for more information.

What is a Parking and Transportation Management District (PTMD)?

A Parking and Transportation Management District (PTMD) is a defined geographic area that may include a mix of retail, entertainment, commercial, medical, educational, civic and residential uses in which City Council finds that traffic flow on public streets requires a higher level of management than commonly provided and determines that parking meters will facilitate traffic flow objectives. The PTMD dedicates 51 percent of the public-paid parking revenue, less City expenses, to help with mobility improvements within the established district.
