The City of Austin’s Wage Theft Program ensures that employers contracting with the City have not been found guilty of wage theft at the state or federal level.

What is wage theft?

Wage theft happens when a worker does not receive full payment for the work they performed. This is different from a subcontractor, vendor, or business not being paid for services or invoices.

Examples of wage theft include:

  • Outright nonpayment of wages
  • Asking employees to work off the clock
  • Withholding employee tips
  • Misclassifying employees as independent contractors
