On Saturday, January 31, 2026, at approximately 2:48 a.m., Austin Police (APD) officers responded to a crash that involved a motor vehicle and a pedestrian in the intersection of North IH 35 service road southbound and East 6th Street. The suspect vehicle left the scene after the crash. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) also responded to the scene and attempted life saving measures. The pedestrian, later identified as Aaron William Johnson, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
 
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s sixth fatal crash of 2026, resulting in six fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2025, five fatal crashes resulted in five deaths.
