Bonds are debts the City uses to fund day-to-day operations and major projects such as building schools or roads.
Bond oversight
City Council established a Bond Oversight Commission, with community members appointed by the Mayor and each Council Member to monitor the issuance of bonds and implementation of bond projects approved in bond elections, including the review of future bonds.

Debt Transparency
Texas law requires an annual report summarizing general obligation bonds, certificates of obligation, and contractual obligations outstanding for the City of Austin.

General Obligation Bonds
General obligation debt is secured by the full faith and credit of the City of Austin and its ad valorem taxing power and includes public improvement bonds (PIBS), certificates of obligation, and contractual obligations. In total, the City has approximately $1.8 billion in voter-approved general obligation debt remaining to be issued. Certificates of obligation and contractual obligations do not require a bond election.
