Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) is changing how it offers bulk and brush collections to residential customers, which include single-family homes up to fourplexes in Austin. Beginning in January 2025, the collections will move from predetermined biannual schedules to an on-demand service.

Household hazardous waste (HHW) collection will also be launched as an on-demand service citywide in January.

Each service address will be able to schedule up to three collections per service every calendar year. Collections will then reset at the beginning of the next year.

Schedule an appointment

Customers who are not already part of the pilot programs will be notified by mail when they can begin scheduling on-demand collections. Appointments can be scheduled on the Austin Recycles app, online or by calling Austin 3-1-1 (512-974-2000).

The scheduling system will list which items or materials can be collected and customers will identify what they plan to set out. Customers will get an email confirmation after an appointment is made and a follow-up email prior to their appointment as a reminder to set out items by 5:30 a.m. on the day of the appointment. Crews will then collect the items on the scheduled day. Collections will not be made without an appointment.

ARR encourages customers to download the Austin Recycles app and sign up for notifications and service reminders. In addition to mailed notifications, the department will notify customers about the on-demand services through the Austin Recycles app.

Setting items out for collection

Set out guidelines for bulk and brush will remain the same. HHW items must be set out in a recyclable container in a secure outdoor location that is protected from the weather. Further instructions will be provided in the scheduling system.

Benefits to customers

On-demand services provide for more efficient and cost-effective waste collection for our customers. Having the ability to schedule collections at their convenience means customers will no longer need to wait six months between collections and can select collection dates that align with when they have materials to dispose of.

HHW collection encourages proper disposal and keeps dangerous materials out of our landfills. Currently, customers must make an appointment to drop off HHW at the City’s Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center . While the center will still be an option for all Austin and Travis Country residents, on-demand service will make the process more convenient for ARR customers.
