Austin, TX - The Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains active today. Overnight sub-freezing temperatures and wintry precipitation created hazardous travel conditions and Austin residents are encouraged to stay home unless necessary. The National Weather Service Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until Wednesday morning.

The EOC continues to coordinate this event among city and county departments, partner agencies, and non-governmental organizations. During the EOC activation, critical updates will be posted online at AustinTexas.gov/Alerts and are available in 14 different languages.

Transportation and Public Works

Transportation and Public Works crews continue to treat critical bridges and roadways. However, travel conditions remain hazardous on the broader street network. The public is encouraged to avoid travel unless critically necessary.

Some roads may be closed due to safety concerns by City, County or State officials. Hazardous travel conditions are anticipated to remain through Wednesday morning, based on the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

School Zone beacons were turned off Tuesday due to the school closures.

Austin-Travis County EMS

Austin-Travis County EMS have responded to more than a dozen cold exposure calls since Monday, including two fatal incidents. The Travis County Medical Examiner will investigate the cause of death.

Exposure to cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia, a time-sensitive, life-threatening condition. Learn the signs and symptoms of cold-related illness and call 9-1-1 if someone is in need of immediate medical attention.

Cold Weather Shelters & Warming Centers

Cold Weather Shelters are planned to remain open through Wednesday morning, based on the current weather forecast. A sixth shelter is anticipated to open Tuesday night to meet demand. Approximately 550 guests were welcomed at the City’s overnight cold weather shelters on Monday night. Shelter intake will continue to take place at One Texas Center (505 Barton Springs Road).

Four libraries, listed below, are serving as warming centers today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

• Central Library – 710 W. César Chávez St.
• Terrazas Branch – 1105 E. Cesar Chavez St.  
• Ruiz Branch – 1600 Grove Blvd.  
• Little Walnut Branch – 835 W. Rundberg Ln.

Community Shelters

If you need to leave your home for any reason due to impacts of the winter storm, Austin 3-1-1 can connect you to community shelter resources. Call 3-1-1 or 512-974-2000 for assistance.

Austin Water

Austin Water crews have restored water service to customers affected by the water main breaks that occurred at West 43rd Street and Rosedale Avenue and at Burnet Road and Koenig Lane. Motorists are asked to avoid these areas while Austin Water crews work to back-fill the excavation sites.

Work also continues at a water main break that was reported overnight at 3012 Stokes Drive. A temporary shutout is currently in place affecting 50 customers. Bottled water is being delivered to those affected.  

Crews are committed to making repairs as quickly and safely as possible. Austin Water expects to complete repairs later this afternoon.  

Customers are being notified directly with door hangers and My ATX Water portal messages to provide updates via email, text and/or automated calls. Customers are encouraged to contact Austin Water's 24/7 customer service line at 512-972-1000 with any questions or concerns or check the Austin Water Leak and Outage map for updates.

Austin Resource Recovery

Austin Resource Recovery suspended Tuesday collections. Customers should leave any uncollected carts and material out to allow crews to catch up throughout the week. Customers can get updates about service changes by downloading the Austin Recycles app or by signing up for reminders at AustinTexas.gov/MySchedule.

Austin Resource Recovery’s Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center and Austin Water’s Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant on FM 973 will be closed for the day.

Austin Energy

Austin Energy reports normal operations at this time with no major power outages as a result of inclement weather. Customers can report outages at AustinEnergy.com/Outages.

Parks and Recreation Department

Austin Parks and Recreation Department will notify after-school participants regarding regularly scheduled programming, including for the recreation centers that are being used as shelters.

General Parks programs are canceled through Wednesday morning at some locations. Check AustinTexas.gov/ParkClosures for the latest information before heading to a location.

Emergency Operations Center

The EOC will remain operational until further notice. In addition to the Alerts page listed above, updates will be posted on @AustinHSEM social media accounts on Facebook, X/Twitter, and Instagram and shared to the official City of Austin accounts.  

Please do not call 9-1-1 unless you have a medical or life-threatening emergency. If you need other types of service or assistance from the city, please call 3-1-1 or 512-974-2000 or download the 3-1-1 mobile app. Keeping 9-1-1 lines clear for only emergencies will allow the City to properly dispatch first responders and emergency personnel to those who need immediate help.
