UPDATE: As the investigation progressed, detectives identified the suspected driver as Tyrone Thompson. Thompson was involved in another crash on Tuesday morning in Travis County and was arrested on unrelated charges. APD VHU filed Crash Involving Death charges on Thompson for the incident that occurred in Downtown Austin. The deceased victim was identified as Cody Jordon Shelton. The second victim is still hospitalized in critical condition.

On Tuesday, March 12, at approximately 1:09 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle and two pedestrians at the intersection of East 7th Street and Red River Street. One of the pedestrians was pronounced deceased on scene, and the second pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with potential life-threatening injuries.
The suspect vehicle did not remain on scene and continued traveling east on East 7th street.
The suspect vehicle is described as:
- Mazda
- Dark gray
This incident is being investigated as Austin's 13th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 13 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 20 fatal crashes resulted in 20 fatalities.
