The Food Justice Mini Grants program awarded $75,000 in grants to those leading transformative change in Austin’s food system

To support communities in their efforts to grow, sell, and eat healthy food, the City of Austin’s Office of Sustainability has awarded $3,000 grants to 25 organizations working to build food justice in Austin. First launched in 2020, the Food Justice Mini Grants program funds projects and programs that help build transformational change around how food moves from the fields to our forks.

“To create lasting change, we must empower those working toward food justice,” said Zach Baumer, the City of Austin’s Interim Chief Sustainability Officer. “Through these grants, we are hoping to foster a stronger, more equitable food landscape across our community.”

One of the funded organizations, ATX Free Fridge, manages community-supported refrigerators available 24/7 where neighbors can donate or take food. Grant funds will support their “Shop for the Fridge” initiative, where core organizers shop weekly to stock the most often used fridges with essentials, including fresh fruit and protein-rich foods. 

“The goal is to create consistency for folks receiving food from the fridges,” said Stephanie, ATX Free Fridge core organizer. “This benefits everyone but will especially help our unhoused neighbors better utilize them as they plan their movements for the day and week.”

Another funded organization, More Than Welcome, serves refugee and asylum-seeking neighbors in Austin through a peer-led support network of staff and volunteers dedicated to helping individuals and families get support for settling into their lives in a new community. This organization will use grant funds to purchase grocery gift cards and ensure recipients can use them by providing rides, translation support, and help navigating the store. 

“We want to transition refugees and asylum seekers from surviving to thriving in Austin,” said Kevin Reichle, More Than Welcome team member. “We want to walk them through that journey with friendship along the way.”

25 organizaciones reciben fondos para iniciativas de justicia alimentaria en Austin

El programa de Minisubvenciones para la Justicia Alimentaria entregó $75.000 a encargados de encabezar el cambio transformador en el sistema alimentario de Austin.

Para apoyar a las comunidades en su esmero por cultivar, vender y comer alimentos saludables, la Oficina de Sostenibilidad de la Ciudad de Austin entregó subvenciones por $3.000 a 25 organizaciones que trabajan para lograr la justicia alimentaria en Austin. El programa de Minisubvenciones para la Justicia Alimentaria, lanzado por primera vez en 2020, financia proyectos y programas que ayudan a lograr un cambio transformador en torno al modo en que los alimentos pasan de los campos a nuestros tenedores.

“Para poder crear un cambio duradero, debemos empoderar a los que trabajan para lograr la justicia alimentaria”, dijo Zach Baumer, Director Ejecutivo provisional de Sostenibilidad de la Ciudad de Austin. “Gracias a estas subvenciones, esperamos fomentar un paisaje alimentario más fuerte y equitativo a lo largo y ancho de nuestra comunidad”.

Una de las organizaciones financiadas, ATX Free Fridge, gestiona refrigeradores sustentados por la comunidad, disponibles las 24 horas de todos los días, donde los vecinos pueden donar o llevarse comida. Los fondos de la subvención apoyarán su iniciativa “Shop for the Fridge” (Compre para la nevera), mediante la que los principales organizadores hacen comprar semanales para abastecer de productos esenciales las neveras usadas con mayor frecuencia, incluso fruta fresca y alimentos con alto contenido proteico.

“El objetivo es crear uniformidad para la gente que recibe la comida de las neveras”, dijo Stephanie, organizadora principal de ATX Free Fridge. “Esto beneficia a todos pero, sobre todo, ayuda a nuestros vecinos sin vivienda a utilizarlas mejor mientras programan sus movimientos diarios y semanales”.

Otra organización financiada, More Than Welcome, trabaja con vecinos refugiados y que buscan asilo en Austin a través de una red de apoyo dirigida por pares con personal y voluntarios dedicados a ayudar a individuos y familias a conseguir apoyo para adaptarse a sus vidas en una nueva comunidad. Esta organización utilizará los fondos de la subvención para comprar tarjetas de obsequio de comestibles y para asegurarse de que los beneficiarios puedan usarlas mediante la provisión de traslados, apoyo con traducción y ayudándoles a navegar la tienda.

“Queremos que los refugiados y las personas que buscan asilo pasen de sobrevivir a prosperar en Austin”, dijo Kevin Reichle, integrante del equipo de More Than Welcome. “Queremos acompañarlos en ese viaje con amistad en el camino”.
