The Disease Prevention and Health Promotion division of the department focuses on programs to screen for and prevent illnesses and health issues.

  • Chronic Disease Prevention and Control works to promote health and quality of life, and to prevent and control chronic disease.
  • Communicable Disease
    • Health Screening Services are provided for many communicable diseases.
    • Hepatitis offers hepatitis immunizations and testing, perinatal Hepatitis B program, and Hepatitis C prevention.
    • HIV/AIDS offers counseling, case management, education, and testing for those at high risk for contracting HIV.
    • Sexually Transmitted (STD) Diseases provides counseling and testing, outreach and education, case management, and HIV Surveillance.
    • Tuberculosis program provides evaluation of clients for latent and active TB disease.
  • Immunizations offers immunization services for children (Shots for Tots) and some for adults ( Big Shots)
  • Injury Prevention works with partners in the community to prevent unintentional injury with a focus on preventing motor vehicle injuries, drug overdose, falls prevention, drowning prevention, and promoting safe sleep for infants.
  • Refugee Services provides a health screening clinic for refugees relocating to the Austin/Travis County area.
