Improperly discarded smoking materials remains one of the top two causes of fires in Austin. Every year, fires caused by cigarettes not properly extinguished cost millions of dollars, lead to many injuries, and in some cases, even death. Don’t toss those butts out your window, off your balcony, or into the nearest planter; put them out the right way!

Because doing otherwise is a real drag.

Whether you’re going out or staying in, having an escape plan is your key to survival. Make sure you know where the exits are (the way you came in isn’t always your way out) and where you’ll meet the rest of your party should you get separated. And if you’re at home, be sure you practice that plan so if the time comes, you’ll be ready.

Because the worst time to think about how you’re going to get out is in the moment when you have to.

It's been said that, "If you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait five minutes." Austin is right smack dab in the middle of flash flood alley and things around here can change just as quickly...in a flash, so to speak. That means dry creek beds can overflow their banks in a matter of minutes. Or in some cases, seconds. That's why it's so important to never try and cross a roadway that has water over it, even if you can still see the road.
