City of Austin Fleet Mobility Services

At the Austin Fleet Mobility Department, we’re proud to play a vital role in keeping our city moving forward. Managing over 7,500 vehicles across 25 departments—including Fire, Police, EMS, Austin Energy, and Austin Water—we support the essential services that make Austin thrive, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and efficiency.

Today, we’re leading exciting efforts to modernize city operations by introducing electric vehicles into fleets like solid waste trucks and police cars, helping reduce emissions and improve efficiency. We have also successfully launched our Connected Vehicle Program, enhancing the safety and intelligence of our streets.

We've even shared some of our successes on a recent podcast.

These innovations reflect our commitment to a more sustainable, forward-thinking Austin—because we believe a better fleet means a better future for everyone.

How We’re Driving Change

Our mobility strategy is designed to drive innovation, sustainability, and efficiency throughout the City of Austin. At its core, this strategy is about embracing advanced automotive technologies and cutting-edge mobility solutions. We’re leading the charge in electric vehicle adoption, efficient vehicle acquisitions, and using data-driven predictive analytics to improve fleet performance.

Telematics Connected Vehicle Program. Telematics and GPS are smart system technologies that can monitor and report on everything from vehicle location and fuel use to tire pressure—in real-time. Providing these insights into fleet operations can help reduce maintenance costs, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance safety. Learn more about Telematics at the City of Austin.

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Police Pursuit Vehicle Pilot. Our Fleet Electrification 2024 strategy was formulated based on alignment with the City of Austin’s fleet mobility strategy, disruptive change in the automobile industry, and the cultural challenge of introducing electrification to a significant portion of our light-duty fleet with the build-out of a supporting charging infrastructure. Learn more about the City of Austin's Going Electric program and BEV Police Pursuit Vehicles.

Battery Electric Refuse Truck Pilot. As part of Austin's Fleet Electrification strategy, we are exploring the integration of BEVs into the city’s refuse and waste management operations. These electric vehicles offer lower operating costs (fuel and maintenance), no direct CO2 emissions, quiet operations, reduced maintenance, fewer moving parts, and align with the City's sustainability goals. These are just a few ways we’re working to modernize city operations and build a more sustainable future for Austin. Learn more about our progress and current initiatives on our Programs page
