The City of Austin is proud to announce our Open Government Action Plan 2024-2028, developed in collaboration with community-based organizations, academic institutional partners, City staff, and the Open Government Partnership (OGP). This plan reflects Austin’s dedication to enhancing transparency, collaboration, and public engagement to strengthen trust and accountability within the community.

About the Open Government Action Plan

As a member of OGP, Austin has collaborated with residents, community leaders, and government stakeholders to co-create a vision for an open, accessible government. The 2024-2028 Action Plan outlines strategies to tackle key challenges through innovation, inclusivity, and digital transformation.

By leveraging strategic foresight, including trend analysis and scenario planning, the plan anticipates risks and opportunities while addressing equity-centered solutions in climate change, economic resilience, and AI accountability. This fosters a futures mindset within the City, enabling actions today that shape a resilient and equitable tomorrow while ensuring adaptable and proactive policymaking in uncertain times.

Here are the Action Plan Commitments:

🏛️ AI accountability: Creating a framework to address bias, errors, and misuse in government AI tools with processes for evaluation, reporting, and resolution.

🌎 Climate adaptation: Developing a scalable process to adapt City operations to climate change, starting with a pilot program in partnership with Texas State University.

⚖️ Economic resilience: Tackling economic inequality in Eastern Crescent neighborhoods through a cross-departmental team to support small businesses and guide policy through data.

These commitments align with our vision to make Austin a thriving, equitable, and connected city. They also establish a first-of-its-kind practice of involving student leaders from Austin Community College’s Center for Government and Civic Service to monitor and learn from the implementation of these commitments.

Collaboration with the Open Government Partnership

Austin’s participation in the OGP strengthens our ability to learn from other cities and governments worldwide. By sharing challenges, solutions, and successes, we’re ensuring that our work reflects international best practices while remaining locally focused.
