KOOP YouthSpin Radio and the Caminos' PSA
Last Saturday, our 12 caminantes along with our Teen Coordinator Frederico Geib and their mentors (multimedia artist Aron Frank and muralist J. Muzacz) went on a studious tour of public artworks and Murals in East Austin followed by a fantastic media training session at KOOP radio. We want to thank Thomas Schieffer for being such an awesome host and teacher! While there, our caminantes got to script write, record and produce their own audio PSA about what Caminos means to them. Our First Mentorship with NAVA, Comics master of LatinoToons !
Our Teen Leadership program completed a very fruitful first month of activities that included the opportunity to apprentice in the art of comics with renowned editor and cartoonist from Mexico City, Juan Navarrete aka ‘NAVA’. The work created by our ‘caminantes’ was inspired by personal stories exploring topics such as the strength and resilience of Latino women, misconceptions of being Latinx in school and more. The first printed edition of our ‘Caminos Comics’ is scheduled for this Summer, ahead of the ESB-MACC’s 10th anniversary. We learned a lot and our whole Caminos team was thrilled to have NAVA as our first mentor! You can find out more about his work at latinotoonscomix.com.
Young Creatives Connect Youth Community Forum
March was a busy first month for our Caminos Teen Interns as they become familiarized with our center’s mission while engaging in meaningful community activities and events. That’s exactly what happened at the start of the month with our first Young Creatives Connect community forum.
On a lovely Friday afternoon, teens from across Austin met at our Blackbox theatre to hang out, make crafts, play games, listen and dance to DJ Marisa’s tracks and than participate in activities designed to generate valuable feedback about the types of programs that they want to experience at the ESB-MACC.

One of the best parts of the evening was when teens were divided into smaller groups to create a multimedia skit portraying their ideas about the ESB-MACC.

Our Beautiful February 2017 Reception
On Thursday, February 23rd the ESB-MACC staff, guest panelists and Austin-area artists had the great pleasure of hosting a charming welcoming reception for the talented students who makeup the CAMINOS’ trailblazing class of 2017!
It was a fun evening where our ‘caminantes’ and their families had the unique opportunity to converse and interact with our talented staff and artists as seen here with the king of Austin Graffiti Art and current exhibitor at our Sam Coronado gallery, Nathan Nordstrom (aka SlokeOne). Nathan passionately addressed all attendees as he shared his trajectory as an Austin street-artist.

It really didn’t take long for the caminantes and their families to feel at home here at the ESB-MACC. We are thrilled to be incubating a great environment for teens to feel safe, connected and grow their skills while carving their own path in a creative career. We received dozens of applications from teens all over the Austin area who are energize to carve their own path in a creative career!
We would like to say thank you to all the applicants, their families, mentors, panelists and educators who have taken part in this process.
The ESB-MACC is committed to incubate an environment that is safe, diverse and engaging for our youth and we look forward to see all of you at our site soon.
The process to select our first Caminos class was extremely hard because our finalists were all very talented. We increased our target class number from 10 to 12 students in order to better accommodate the high demand while still providing a quality program. Here are our selected finalists.
