On Feb. 17, 2005, City Council passed resolution 050217-50, which developed a Bond Election Advisory Committee to provide a recommendation to City Council on a general obligation bond package for citizens to vote on in either May or November 2006.

Bond Election Advisory Committee

On Feb. 17, 2005, City Council formed the citizen 2006 Bond Election Advisory Committee (BEAC) to make recommendations on the projects and programs for the bond program. Council appointed members to the committee in April 2005. The BEAC was composed of 21 citizens. Between July and October, the BEAC held 12 regular meetings and 24 meetings. All meetings were open to the public.

Bond Package Recommendations to City Council

The Bond Election Advisory Committee recommended a bond package to City Council on Feb. 2, 2006 with the intention of the City holding an election in May 2006. Read the BEAC Recommendations Report here.

On Feb. 9, 2006, City Council voted to hold the election in November rather than in May. Between February and May 2006, City staff provided presentations on the City’s debt capacity and the various areas considered for bond funding.

2006 Bond Election

City Council passed Ordinance No. 20060824-006 on Aug. 24, 2006, which called for a special election to be held on Nov. 7, 2006. Austin voters approved seven bond propositions, allowing the City to borrow $567.4 million for capital improvement projects.
