Ready, Set, Jet: Navigating the Busiest Summer Yet at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

"Howdy, travelers! It's time to pack your bags, book your flights, and head to the airport. As you get your vacation mood boards ready, we want to make sure you’re prepared for a busy summer! During the summer of 2022, a whopping 5,741,431 million passengers traveled through AUS - making it the busiest summer travel season in airport history; this summer is set to break even more records.

But fear not, AUS has been working hard to make your travel experience as smooth and comfortable as possible. We’ve got exciting things ahead, with new nonstop destinations launching, including Sacramento, Vancouver, Calgary, Omaha, Panama City, and Pensacola. Plus, we’re making progress on some exciting airport improvements, like our new outbound baggage handling system, new screening equipment, and the Westside expansion project that's breaking ground this summer.

Now, we know that traveling can be a little stressful, especially during peak travel times at one of the fastest growing airports in the US, but don't worry, we've got some tips for you!

First and foremost, we ask that you plan ahead and arrive early. Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays tend to be the busiest days, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to find parking, check luggage, and go through security screening.

  • If you're using general TSA screening, it's recommended that you arrive at least 2.5 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights.
  • Parking might be a bit tricky, too, so be sure to reserve a space ahead of time and check for real-time parking availability at ABIAparking.com
  • As always, it's important to pack correctly and be aware of security procedures. We’ve seen a record number of prohibited items, like firearms and liquids exceeding 3.4 oz. so be sure to pack accordingly and visit TSA.gov for guidance.
  • For those who require mobility assistance or have accessibility needs, AUS offers a wide range of services, including the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, a Mobility Assistance Zone program, and a Mobility Lounge.
  • Once you're inside the airport, be sure to explore all the food, art installations, live music stages, and more. You can even use the AUS digital wayfinding map to help you navigate the airport. And if you're looking for shopping and dining options, be sure to check out Shop and Dine at AUS.

So there you have it, folks. AUS is expecting a busy summer, but with a little planning and a lot of patience, you'll be able to get where you're going in no time. Happy travels! For all of our travel tips, click here.
