Inventory of Austin's open gov / "smart city" projects

A list of open government and/or "smart cities" projects City departments are working on

As part of our effort to identify how to help the City's open government and "smart cities" projects succeed, we compiled this inventory of projects that relate to at least one of the Open Government Partnership's principles of open government: transparency, accountability, technology innovation, and civic participation. The purpose of the inventory is to understand the types of open gov/smart city projects (and opportunities) City departments are involved in, as well as what challenges these projects face in achieving their goals. CTM, TARA, and the Innovation Office are using this information to identify and prioritize what resources and guidance the City should create or make available to help projects succeed. This inventory is also a running list of projects that relate to the City of Austin's Smart City Strategic Roadmap, which aims to further the City's ability to use technology in solving real problems for real people.

Read "About the Inventory" below for background and methodology on this collection of projects. The inventory is open to updates, edits, and additional projects.

About the inventory

The inventory is a result of data collection and analysis efforts by City staff from Communications and Technology Management (CTM), Telecommunications and Regulatory Affairs (TARA), and the Innovation Office. This team began compiling the list in September 2016 and expects to continue adding to it through summer 2017.

The list of projects is not comprehensive -- there are other open gov and smart cities initiatives going on across the City -- but it does provide insight on the challenges that these projects are trying to address. We intend to add to the inventory throughout the summer of 2017.

Information sources

The inventory contains information from two sources:

  1. Responses to a questionnaire provided by City staff working on these various projects (responses are timestamped to indicate when they were submitted).
  2. Information resulting from an analysis of the projects conducted by staff from CTM, TARA, and the Innovation Office.

Why are some projects missing descriptions?

We're working with the leads from those projects to post descriptions of their initiatives and will update the inventory as we get them. This is slow going in some cases.

If there's a project you are particularly interested in and want to get more information on it, leave a comment on this post, and we'll prioritize getting more information on it.

Want to add a project to this list, or update an existing project?

Please email us at innovation@austintexas.gov to discuss getting it added to the list!
