Deceased: Alejandro Huerta Hernandez, Hispanic male, 6/26/2003
On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at approximately 11:50 p.m., APD officers responded to a single vehicle crash in the 10500 block of N. IH-35. The initial investigation shows that the green, 2005 Honda Accord driven by Alejandro Huerta Hernadez left the east side of the roadway and proceeded through a grassy median before striking a cement base that held a highway sign. The initial officer attempted to make contact with the unresponsive driver, but the Accord quickly caught fire. The driver’s side door would not open so he smashed the rear driver’s side window in an attempt to extricate Alejandro Hernandez through the back seat as the fire spread to the passenger’s side.
The Austin Fire Department arrived on scene to begin battling the vehicle fire. Officers on scene worked together to pry the passenger’s side door open where they were able to remove Alejandro Hernandez. They carried him away from the vehicle so fire personnel and Austin-Travis County EMS could attempt life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Alejandro Hernandez was pronounced on scene at 12:34 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2020.
