The Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for coordinating and conducting fire and life safety inspection services for the City of Austin.
Maintenance Inspections
There are a number of commercial and retail spaces within the City of Austin that receive regular fire and life-safety inspections.
Additionally, the Fire Marshal's Office conducts life-safety inspections for daycares, adoption and foster homes, and multi-family residential occupancies.
For additional information or to schedule an Annual Inspection, please visit our Annual Inspection page.
New Construction, Remodel, and/or Building Permit Inspections
New construction (technical) inspections are provided for all structures built within the City of Austin. These inspections must be ‘passed’ prior to occupancy. They range from a visual check of sprinkler and alarm systems to an observed discharge of a special extinguishing system.
The Fire Marshal's Office requires advance payment for services. All payments require processing through the Austin Build + Connect (AB+C) portal. Please visit the Development Services Department website for information about setting up a portal account.
Mobile Food Vending Unit Inspections
The Austin Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office inspects all mobile food vending units for fire safety issues during the annual City of Austin scheduled Health Department Inspection. Please visit our Mobile Food Vendor's page - En Español that contains additional requirements for inspections.
Home Hazard Assessment Program
The Uniform Fire Code does not give direct authority to the Fire Department to conduct fire and life-safety inspections of single-family homes and duplexes. However, through the AFD’s "Home Hazard Assessment" program, homeowners can effectively conduct their own fire and life-safety inspection. If you have a concern about your private residence, contact the AFD Public Education Division at (512) 974-0290.
