The City of Austin storm drain marking program is a hands-on project for volunteers who are interested in educating the public about pollution prevention.

To help prevent dumping in storm drains, volunteers place markers on the drains as a visual reminder that the storm drains run directly to our creeks. Volunteers can also distribute door hangers in the area to remind citizens that rain washes garden chemicals, pet waste, motor oil, and other pollutants from our yards, driveways, sidewalks, and all areas of land into our waterways.

Checking out storm drain marking kits is available on a limited, appointment only basis due to COVID-19.

Participants must be available to attend a short, pre-activity training (by appointment).  After the training has been completed, appointments to pick up and return the supplies will be made. Material pickup and drop-off will be at the One Texas Center – 505 Barton Springs Road.  Volunteers are not allowed to enter the building at this time. They will meet with the Program Coordinator at the picnic table outside the parking garage. When on One Texas Center property and in the parking lot or garage, volunteers are required to wear a face mask and maintain a distance 6 feet from others.

Training hours and supply pickup/drop off hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., by appointment only. Participants have up to one month to mark storm drains when it is convenient for their schedule. 

Each kit (good for 1-4 people) includes 25 storm drain markers. We recommend group sizes of 4 or less volunteers and ask groups to follow social distancing protocols when out in public.
