Dog and cat waste isn’t just smelly, it’s a serious health risk. Remember to Scoop the Poop every stinking time!

There are more than 250,000 dogs in Austin—that’s about 150,000 pounds of waste every day. Even just one pile left behind adds up.

Health Risks to People and Pets

When left on the ground, pet waste can spread harmful bacteria and parasites, such as: 

  • Giardia
  • Roundworms
  • Salmonella
  • Other viruses and parasites

Children and pets are most at risk from playing in contaminated areas. 

Water Pollution

When pet waste washes into creeks and storm drains it may cause: 

  • Algae and weed overgrowth
  • Lower oxygen levels for fish
  • Unsafe areas for swimming, wading, or fishing 

How Can You Help?

  • Bring It. Carry a bag when you walk your dog.
  • Scoop It. Use the bag like a glove. Pick up the poop, then turn the bag inside out and seal it.
  • Toss It. Put the bag in the trash. Never leave it on the ground or throw it in a storm drain.
  • Place a sign. Encourage your neighbors to clean up too! Free Scoop the Poop signs are available for Austin residents. 
Is leaving pet waste on the ground against the law?

Yes – by City Ordinances, animal owners and handlers must pick up after pets.

§ 3-4-6 DEFECATION BY A DOG OR CAT.  "An owner or handler shall promptly remove and sanitarily dispose of feces left on public or private property by a dog or cat being handled by the person, other than property owned by the owner or handler of the dog or cat.”

§ 15-6-112 - ACCUMULATIONS AND DEPOSIT OF WASTE PROHIBITED. (A) A person commits an offense if the person deposits, causes to be deposited, or permits to accumulate any dry or wet solid waste upon any public or private premises within the city in such a manner as to emit noxious or offensive odors or to become unsanitary or injurious to public health or safety.

§ 3-2-11 - ENCLOSURE REQUIRED. (A)(3) maintained in a sanitary condition that does not allow flies to breed or cause an odor offensive to an adjacent residence or business.
