Language Access Complaint Form

The City of Austin's language access policy requires certain public-facing agencies to offer interpretation services in any language and to translate important documents into at least the top twelve most common non-English languages in the city. If you have had trouble with our departments'/agencies' language access services, please complete this form.

Title VI Complaint Process

The City of Austin assures full compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964, the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987 and related statutes and regulations in all programs and activities. Any person who believes they have been subjected to unlawful discriminatory practices under Title VI has the right to ­ le a formal complaint. 

Any such complaint must be ­ led in writing or in person with the Texas Department of Transportation, Civil Rights Division within 180 days following the date of the alleged discriminatory action.

Employment

Our office is a Fair Employment Practicing Agency (FEPA), under U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). This office is responsible for enforcing federal laws and City of Austin Ordinances that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and related conditions, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

Most employers with at least 15 employees are covered by EEOC laws (20 employees in age discrimination cases). Most labor unions and employment agencies are also covered.  Our office is authorized to investigate and resolve complaints of sexual harassment involving entities with less than 15 employees under Texas law.

The laws apply to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits.

Fair Housing

42 U.S.C. §§ 3601-19

Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, because of race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), familial status, national origin, and disability. It also requires that all federal programs relating to housing and urban development be administered in a manner that affirmatively furthers fair housing.

Our office as a Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP) also accepts complaints of discrimination based on: creed, student status, marital status, age, or source of income under City of Austin Ordinance.

Public Accommodations

A person, including the owner, operator, or lessee of a public accommodation may not directly or indirectly exclude, segregate, limit, refuse or deny a person the accommodations, advantages, facilities, benefits, privileges, services, or goods of the public accommodation based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, protective hairstyle, reproductive health action, or disability.

Public accommodation means a lodging, hotels, eating establishments, retail stores,  gasoline stations; entertainment facilities, hospitals, or any establishment which holds itself out as serving the general public.

Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

In accordance with the requirements of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), the City of Austin will not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability in its services, programs, or activities.
