The Missing Person Unit conducts and documents all investigations, and makes referrals to courts and other agencies when necessary. In addition to the above duties, the Unit is responsible for Endangered Missing Person Alert (Intellectual Disability), Silver Alerts (Missing Elderly), Blue Alerts (Missing or killed in the line of duty Police Officers), CLEAR Alerts (missing adult/criminal nexus) and Amber Alerts (Missing Children).
The Missing Person Unit is comprised of One Lieutenant, One Sergeant, Seven Detectives and One Administrative Specialist. The personnel in the Unit work closely with the Volunteer Search and Rescue teams and the Austin Fire Department Search and Rescue Team when searching for missing children and adults. The Seven Detectives in the Missing Person Unit handle a large case load and must possess the ability to work well under pressure and in a team environment.
The Missing Person Unit is staffed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. On-call Detectives are available to respond after hours and on the weekends to assist patrol with investigations that require immediate attention.
