The Dougherty Arts School's adult arts program is dedicated to enriching the Austin community with hands-on artistic opportunities. The school hires skilled artists that are committed to sharing their knowledge and exploring new ideas with students. Classes provide the springboard for students wishing to experience creativity and personal growth.

Register Online

Registration is offered online. Online registration ends several days before classes begin. Once online registration has ended, call the registration office to see if spaces are still available. Early registration is encouraged to ensure classes meet their minimum enrollment and to have the best chance to secure a space before the class is full.

Welcome to the Future! Fall 2020 Live Stream Adult Classes!

Welcome to the future! We can’t wait to see everyone back in our studios being creative and connecting with other artists. Until then, we are now offering live, online classes with our talented instructors in different media. Join in on the fun and get connected again with other students.

-- Classes require students to purchase their own supplies.
-- One student per registration, each household with more than one student will need to register each student to participate.
-- Students will need a digital device: computer, iPad, digital phone, etc.
-- To make sure the class is an enjoyable experience, students are required to have their cameras on during the class.
-- Internet Access that connects to the device you are using. Classes are held over Zoom so the free Zoom App and Free Zoom login required.

A study in Ceramic Design and Hand Building

Instructor: Robin Gary

Discuss functional requirements, types of clay, and creative design elements as you design and make your own dinnerware with hand building. During each session, I will demo how to make one or two pieces based on your table setting goals. The usual suspects are plates, bowls and cups. You can also learn about making pitchers, sugar and creamer sets, and serving spoons.

Ceramic electric kiln firing available only with approved clay bodies and underglazes which is listed in the supply list, and upon having a full kiln. Delivery and pick-up scheduled by appointment only; no drop-ins

Classic Slab Vessels

Instructor Jennifer Hill

Students will learn one of the foundational techniques of hand-building in clay, using soft clay slabs to create a variety of vessels from a daily coffee mug to a tall centerpiece vase. Modified to be workable at home on a table.

Ceramic electric kiln firing available only with approved clay bodies and underglazes which is listed in the supply list, and upon having a full kiln. Delivery and pick-up scheduled by appointment only; no drop-ins.

Adobe Creative Suite Foundation

Instructor: Dan Wolff

Explore Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign in this foundation class. Each class will tackle a different program and go over layout, navigation, toolsets, layers, and basic functions.

Smart Phone Photography

Instructor: Shelley Wood

Using the camera everyone has with them at all times learn how to better use the phones’ camera and easy techniques to improve your images. We will cover image adjustments, removing content from an image, diminishing fine lines and blemishes, double exposures, artistic applications and more.

Basic Drawing

Instructor: Dave Thornberry

This class covers the fundamentals of intro drawing including line vs. tone, intro to tools, proportion and position mapping, linear perspective, value shapes and the value scale, composition.

Ditch Your Eraser

Instructor: Adrienne Hodge

An all-levels class dedicated to helping students develop or improve drawing abilities by exploring still life objects, interior spaces, landscapes, & portraits using pen and ink.

Forms

Teen Request
Two forms are required for students under the age of 18; these must be completed and signed by guardian before the student can attend class. Only ages 15 -17 considered. Request must be submitted at least 5 business days before the class begins. Requests to attend classes with descriptions that state students must be at least 18 years old will not be approved.

Full payment is required at the time of the registration and to secure a spot in a class, unless otherwise noted. Registrations will be accepted online,  by phone at 512-974-4040 or in person at the Dougherty Arts Center front desk. No registrations will be accepted prior to 10AM on the first day of each registration date (refer to registration dates prior to submittal).

Registrations received prior to 10AM on the first day of registration will be returned without being processed.
