Meet our new employee: Leti Alvarez

Leti Alvarez stands outside smiling. She wears a red flannel and stands in front of a field with trees.

Meet our newest Office of Sustainability team member: Leti Alvarez! Leti is joining the office to help with the creation of a regional climate action plan by providing administrative support. Like other recent new employees Mali and Tasnuva, Leti's position is also being funded through the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant, offered through the Inflation Reduction Act. Please join us in welcoming Leti to the team and learn about their journey to the office!

Q: Where are you from, and what do you like best about your hometown?

It seems rare these days, but I was born and raised right here in Austin, Texas. I’ve always loved my city. With all the changes Austin has been through, I feel like I've gotten to enjoy getting to know Austin time and time again. There are always new spots for food, coffee, or shopping. I also enjoy visiting new murals around town!

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and what interested you in joining the Office of Sustainability.

I am a wife and mother to two young adults and have a big family that is all here in Austin. I’ve recently made a career change, previously having worked in a growing medical corporation. I’m so excited to be part of the City of Austin and the Office of Sustainability. It's been a big change, and I’m loving it so far. The Office of Sustainability seems like a small, close-knit community, and I’m really enjoying it.

Q: What are you most excited to accomplish during your time with the Office of Sustainability?

I’m excited to be able to help support the bigger picture, and am eager to gain more knowledge. I look forward to being able to help educate people about simple things they can do to help with sustainability, especially those who may not have the resources to learn.

Q: What are some of your favorite things to do or places to go in Austin?

With our growing city, I feel like I can’t keep up with all the new things to do! My husband and I love to travel, but recently, we decided we should also do "staycations" — to try out new things around Austin. We are definitely foodies! We enjoy visiting restaurants and learning about the owners, their backstories, and what brought them here to Austin.

Q: What is your favorite sustainable thing to do in your personal life?

I would have to say thrifting is my favorite sustainable thing to do. My family loves to repurpose found items to furnish our homes, and we all adore “new to us” clothing.

Q: What is your favorite food and why?

My husband's Bar-B-Q! He loves to smoke different meats. He’s perfected brisket and has smoked barbacoa. There's nothing like it around town!
