The Office of Sustainability partnered with local event organizers to create the Positive Impact on Climate and Community (PICC) program.
Large events and festivals in Austin attract over one million attendees annually and have a large environmental impact. These events involve air and ground transportation, energy and water usage, food service, and waste management. By working together, the Office of Sustainability and some of the event organizers behind the largest events in the city offered a unique approach to carbon offsets to mitigate some impacts, while also supporting local sustainability projects that benefit our community.
In 2014, the Austin City Limits Music Festival worked with Art Market vendors to designate specialty items for sale to support PICC. Over $4,000 was raised voluntarily through Art Market sales, with proceeds supporting the Waller Creek Conservancy.
About the Austin City Limits Music Festival: The ACL Festival takes place on 46 acres in Zilker Park – the crown jewel of Austin’s public green spaces. It plays host not only to 130+ artists from across the globe, but also amazing local eats and wares, free fun for kids, green goings-on, and other cool activities to entertain you between sets.
About the Waller Creek Conservancy: Waller Creek represents the largest urban creek in the nation to undergo the level of transformation the conservancy envisions. This project will completely transform how disconnected entities and interests relate and interact with each other. While the impact area at hand is 28 acres, the conservancy is encouraging designers to pay special attention to key links and passages connecting people and the environment to the targeted redevelopment zone.
