The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (ESB MACC) presents the 14th annual La Mujer: A Celebration of Women on Saturday, April 26 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Parque Zaragoza, 2608 Gonzales St. La Mujer takes place inside the Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center and outside at the park and outdoor stage.
La Mujer celebrates women and women-identifying individuals in Austin’s Mexican American and Latina/o/x/e community. It is a free event – open to all ages, gender identities, and cultural identities – where women can be seen, heard, and empowered. Free workshops and activities focus on wellness, justice, know-your-rights, and all-local visual and performing arts groups.
All event activities and workshops are free and will bring together women artisans, activists, and community builders! There will be a special appearance by Judge Bianca Garcia, a women of color-centered marketplace by Frida Friday ATX, and hands-on activities and workshops for all ages including jewelry making, stickers, and button making.
There is a focus on uplifting and hiring women for all roles in the production of this event, including graphic design, sound engineer, and artists! There will be mental health resources on site presented by Ashwell House and plenty of amenities like food trucks, aguas frescas, outdoor seating, DJ music, and raffle prizes. There is a playground on site that will be open during the event where children can play.
Kat Talley and Ruben Esquivel, artists for the Art In Public Places sculptural project for the ESB-MACC expansion, will be engaging the community during La Mujer. The artists will inform and gather inspiration from the public, as they work towards the completion of their conceptual design. Participants will be able to learn more about the artists’ goals as well as share their own personal ESB-MACC stories.
