On Sunday, December 15, 2024, at approximately 6:49 a.m. Austin Police Department (APD) Officers responded to a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian in the 2000 block of E Riverside Dr. The pedestrian later identified as Juan Melesio, was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver, identified as Ali-Mbemba Kembilu was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI).

This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 88th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 94 fatalities. This investigation is ongoing. On the date of this crash in 2023, 87 fatal crashes resulted in 90 fatalities.
