On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at approximately 8:35 p.m. Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to the call of a shooting in the 6300 block of Thurgood Avenue. When officers arrived on the scene, they located a juvenile male, later identified as Jeremiah Cavazos, who had an apparent gunshot wound. Cavazos was pronounced deceased on scene at 8:55 p.m.
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. It was found that Cavazos and Juvenile #2 drove a stolen vehicle to this location to meet with Juvenile #1. During this meeting, Cavazos and Juvenile #2 appeared to rob Juvenile #1, which resulted in a shootout between all three individuals. Cavazos was shot and got back into the backseat of the suspect vehicle. Juvenile #2 began to drive the suspect vehicle, which threw Cavazos from the backseat of the vehicle onto the pavement. Juvenile #1 fled from the scene on foot.
Juvenile #2 has been arrested and charged with Capital Murder. Juvenile #1 has been arrested and charged with First Degree Murder.
