Deceased:  Ricardo Cortez, Hispanic male, 04/15/1968

On Saturday, October 21, 2023, at approximately 11:43 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a shooting in the 10500 block of Foundation Road. The caller stated he shot a suspect, Ricardo Cortez, who had broken into his home. Officers arrived at the scene and located Mr. Cortez with a gunshot wound. Mr. Cortez died a short time later.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. Preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Cortez broke into the house and then he broke into the bedroom where the resident was located. The resident shot and killed Mr. Cortez in self-defense and immediately called 911.
