On Friday, June 30, 2023, at approximately 5:03 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers, Austin Fire Department (AFD), and Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) responded to a crash between an on-duty officer in a marked APD patrol unit and another vehicle in the 13000 block of US HWY N 183 NB. The other vehicle's driver, Maria Casillas Reyes, died on the scene. APD officer Alyssa Preuss was taken to a local hospital by paramedics with injuries. The officer has since been released.
APD's Vehicular Homicide unit is investigating the crash. In addition, APD's Internal Affairs unit is conducting an internal investigation to determine whether any policy violations occurred.
This incident is being investigated as Austin's 50th fatal crash of 2023, resulting in 50 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2022, 57 fatal crashes resulted in 58 deaths. These statements are from the initial assessment of the fatal crash, and the investigation is still pending. Fatality information may change.
