The Austin Police Department (APD) is currently investigating a series of overdose incidents that resulted in two deaths that occurred early Friday morning. While the investigations are still underway and we are still working to confirm the exact drugs involved, based on preliminary information we believe the drug Fentanyl may be involved in a few of the recent incidents. Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate similar to heroin, but much more powerful.
- It can be in a pill, powder, patch, solid, or liquid form
- It can be lethal in small amounts
Investigators are currently working to confirm the drugs involved, the source of those drugs, and any connections between the victims. The community needs to be aware of this public health risk and the dangers associated with the drug Fentanyl.
Anyone with information regarding these cases is asked to call APD Homicide or the Organized Crime division at 512-974-8477 (TIPS), or utilize the Crime Stoppers app. You may remain anonymous.
Members of the Austin Police Department and Austin Travis County EMS will have a media availability on Friday, March 4, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. in the PIO media room of APD Headquarters located at 715 E. 8th Street.
