The Austin Police Department (APD) has identified Jose Rangel Mata as the victim of the homicide in the 2500 block of Elmont Dr.
On Thursday, January 27, 2022, at approximately 12:23 p.m., 9-1-1 received a call of a man shot in the 2500 block of Elmont Dr. The man had been shot inside of a vehicle, and the driver transported the victim to a nearby minor emergency clinic. APD and Austin-Travis County EMS arrived on scene at the clinic and discovered a man with life threatening injuries. Despite lifesaving measures, the victim succumbed to his injuries. Mata was pronounced deceased at 12:42 p.m. by Dr. Demary.
Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists responded to process the scene. Witnesses said that an individual approached the victim in the parking lot of the 2500 block of Elmont Dr. and demanded his money. The suspect then shot the victim and fled on foot.
The suspect was described as a Black male in his early 20’s, 6’, with a thin to medium build, short hair and prescription glasses. The suspect was last seen running into the Ballpark North Apartments located at 4600 Elmont Dr. It is believed that the suspect most likely lives in the area.
On January 28, 2022, the Travis County Medical Examiner’s conducted an autopsy and determined the official cause of death as gunshot wound, and the manner, homicide.
