Austin Police Department Chief Joseph Chacon appointed two new members to his executive team effective April 2, 2021: Assistant Chief Jerry Bauzon and Assistant Chief Scott Perry.
As a permanent member of the executive team, Assistant Chief Bauzon will manage Central Bureau operations which includes Downtown Patrol, ARIC, Special Events and Executive Protection.
Assistant Chief Perry will temporarily oversee the North Bureau which includes north patrol sectors, Special Operations and airport functions. He will take on this new role during Chief Chacon’s tenure as the Acting Chief of Police.
Assistant Chief Jerry Bauzon
Importantly, Assistant Chief Bauzon will serve as the department’s first Asian American Chief. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to serve both our officers and our community in the role of Assistant Chief. As an Asian American, I am proud to represent our dynamic culture and I look forward to strengthening APD’s relationship with our AAPI community,” Assistant Chief Bauzon said.
Assistant Chief Jerry Bauzon began his career with the Austin Police Department in 1993. During his tenure, he served in patrol, Homicide, Homicide Cold Case, Robbery, Child Abuse and Internal Affairs. Most recently, Assistant Chief Bauzon served as Commander over Professional Standards, leading Internal Affairs and Risk Management, before transferring to oversee Patrol Operations in the southwest part of the city.
Assistant Chief Scott Perry
Assistant Chief Perry also began his career with the Austin Police Department in 1993. He has held various positions in patrol, Internal Affairs, Special Investigations, Public Information and with the executive team. His most recent assignment was Commander over Northeast Austin patrol. Assistant Chief Perry graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
“I am honored to have been appointed as an assistant chief and look forward to partnering with the hard working women and men of APD as we continue to serve our community,” Assistant Chief Perry said.
Assistant Chief James Mason
Also prior to his retirement, Chief Manley appointed James Mason to Assistant Chief. He has been with the department for 24 years. During that time, he served in patrol, as a District Representative and a Sector Detective, in Child Abuse, Public Information, Internal Affairs, Risk Management and Property Crime. Prior to his appointment, he was the Commander over Special Operations. Assistant Chief Mason will oversee Recruiting, Training, Internal Affairs, Police Technology and Fleet Services. He received his Public Manager Certification through Texas State University and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of South Florida.
