Fire Department approval is required to install a stationary Liquefied Petroleum gas (LP-Gas) aboveground or underground container or LP-Gas cylinder exchange cabinet at commercial businesses, multi-family housing, and one- and two- family dwellings. The requirement is located in Section 6101.2 of the 2015 International Fire Code.
6101.2 Permits. The requirements in this Chapter for permits to store or use hazardous materials within the City of Austin are applicable to a permit to store, use, handle, or dispense LP-gas, or to install or maintain an LP-gas container.
Permits shall be required as set forth in Sections 105.6. As noted in Section 105.6.21.7 of these amendments, a permit is not required for non-commercial use at a single-family residence. However, the information concerning location and exposures, as outlined in the Fire Protection Criteria Manual, shall be provided to the Fire Department by the owner of the residence.
Where a single container is over 2,000 gallons (7571 L) or the aggregate capacity of containers is over 4,000 gallons (15,142 L) water capacity, the installer shall submit plans for the installation.
Distributors shall not fill an LP-gas container for which a permit is required unless a permit for installation has been issued for that location by the Fire Chief.
Before installing the LP-Gas container or cylinder exchange cabinet. the owner, LP-Gas supplier or installer shall complete and e-mail the Outdoor Liquefied Petroleum Gas Installation Request to Austin Fire Department. AFD processes Installation Requests for single-family dwellings within 7 calendar days and within 14 days at Commercial and multi-family housing properties. Electronic signatures are acceptable. AFD will return the Installation Request to the Applicant upon completion. If AFD indicates that a Site Plan Correction, Site Development Exemption or Building Permit is required, include this completed Installation Request form with the plan review submittal.
