Date: December 4, 2024
Time: 11:53 a.m.
Location: 6407 Springdale Rd.
Arrested: Orlen Guillen, White male, 19 years of age
Nefi Amed Gomez-Lopez, White male, 20 years of age
On December 4, 2024, at approximately 11:53 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) Patrol officers responded to an apartment complex at 6407 Springdale Rd. for a Burglary Hotshot call. Upon arrival, officers located a victim and witness along with key pieces of evidence, including an expended 9MM shell casing. During the investigation, officers learned that multiple suspects made unlawful entry into an apartment, with a witness inside. The witness hid in a closet and called for her boyfriend to come help her. At some point during the incident, four burglars left the scene after being chased away by the witness's boyfriend. One of the suspects, Orlen Guillen, fired a pistol at the boyfriend as he was chasing them on foot. Thankfully he was not injured.
The suspects were able to flee the scene before officers arrived. APD Residential Burglary Unit Detectives responded to the scene to assist patrol officers. Detectives recovered detailed surveillance video from the parking lot where the suspects parked their vehicle before committing the Burglary. A license plate of the suspect vehicle was obtained from surveillance video and Residential Burglary Unit Detectives worked together throughout the evening to attempt to locate the vehicle. A Flock License Plate Reader hit placed the vehicle in the area of the offense when it occurred. During this time, detectives identified a possible address linked to a suspect, identified as Orlen Guillen, and his mother. On December 5, 2024, the APD Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) located the suspect vehicle and began conducting surveillance. Guillen was observed cleaning the vehicle at a nearby car wash and was taken into custody by the VCTF. The vehicle was seized as evidence and a search warrant is pending. The VCTF identified another suspect, Nefi Amed Gomez-Lopez (still dressed in similar clothing worn during the shooting) loitering in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The VCTF successfully captured him, but not before he is believed to have tossed a stolen 9MM pistol from his backpack during his apprehension. Both suspects were transported to the Residential Burglary Unit which resulted in full and detailed confessions from both suspects.
The Residential Burglary Unit Detectives executed a search warrant on the residence of Orlen Guillen. During a search of this residence, clothing was recovered that matched what Guillen was seen wearing on surveillance video during the shooting. A cellular device was also recovered during this time, which is believed to be linked to one suspect. In addition, another vehicle was also seized (search warrant pending) which is believed to potentially hold further evidence of this crime. A detective with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Taskforce ran a National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) check on the expended 9MM shell casing recovered during the investigation. A NIBIN hit was later generated for an Aggravated Assault with shots fired in relation to a separate residential burglary that occurred on November 8, 2024. Due to efforts of Residential Burglary Unit Detectives, at least one suspect has been implicated in the November 8 shooting. The NIBIN analysis confirmed the stolen 9MM pistol was used in the commission of each of these offenses.
Detectives believe there are still two suspects outstanding. Anyone with information is asked to contact the APD Residential Burglary Unit at (512) 974-4941 or via email at APDBurglaryUnit@austintexas.gov.
