On Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 6:22 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash involving an SUV and a hatchback sedan at the intersection of Great Hills Trail and North Capital of Texas Highway. The SUV ran the red light at the intersection traveling southbound on Great Hills Trail. The hatchback was traveling westbound on N Capital of Texas Highway and entered the intersection on a green light, resulting in a crash with the SUV. A passenger of the SUV was transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced deceased. Two additional passengers from the SUV were also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining parties stayed on scene and are cooperating with this investigation.
 
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 67 fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 72 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2023, 68 fatal crashes resulted in 71 fatalities.
