On Thursday, July 4, 2024, at 5:12 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash in the 8600 block of Research Boulevard service road southbound. The crash was between a vehicle and the concrete base of a business sign. Both occupants that were traveling in the vehicle were pronounced deceased on scene.
 
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 40th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 42 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 51 fatal crashes resulted in 51 fatalities.
