On Monday, December 11, 2023, at approximately 9:37 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between a sedan and a CapMetro bus in the 2700 block of East Highway 71 Westbound. All occupants from the sedan were transported to a local hospital where one of the passengers, who was later identified as Susana Barnes, died. The CapMetro bus driver was also transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

This incident is being investigated as Austin's 86th fatal crash of 2023, resulting in 89 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2022, 104 fatal crashes resulted in 108 deaths.
