On Friday, December 22, 2023, at approximately 6:49 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between a sedan and a pedestrian in the 2200 Block of Airport Boulevard. The pedestrian, who was later identified as Willard Bateman, died on the scene. The driver remained on the scene, was not intoxicated and is cooperating with the investigation.
 
This incident is being investigated as Austin's 88th fatal crash of 2023, resulting in 91 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2022, 115 fatal crashes resulted in 121 deaths.
