On Monday, February 12, 2024 at approximately 7:20 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD officers responded to a crash involving a sedan and a hatchback in the 200 block of US 183 Toll SB lanes. The sedan was stopped in the middle lane with the vehicle hazards on. The hatchback then crashed into the sedan’s rear. Two juvenile passengers were traveling in the sedan. One of the juvenile passengers, DeErick Williams II, suffered life-threatening injuries and later died. The driver of the sedan was not injured, nor impaired. The driver of the hatchback suffered minor injury, remained on scene, and is cooperating with the investigation.
This incident is being investigated as Austin's 6th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 6 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 11 fatal crashes resulted in 11 fatalities.
