A half-mile stretch of West William Cannon Drive will operate with four lanes (two in each direction) through November 2023.
South Austin commuters should stay alert for traffic changes on West William Cannon Drive beginning next Tuesday, May 30. The City of Austin will temporarily close the street’s two outermost travel lanes in each direction between Menchaca Road and Woodhue Drive.
The half-mile, six-lane stretch of West William Cannon Drive will operate with four lanes (two in each direction) through November 2023. Sidewalk and bus stop access will be maintained for pedestrians traveling through the work zone. Driveway access will be maintained for all businesses along the work zone.
Please keep crews safe by traveling cautiously through the work zone and following all traffic control signs.
The traffic changes will ensure the safety of the crews working on an urgent safety project. The City of Austin is stabilizing the Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls on the west approach of the West William Cannon Drive bridge. Contractors will install over 500 soil nails into the bridge’s retaining walls before adding a new layer of concrete to each wall. This work will stabilize the sediment beneath the roadway and ensure safe travel conditions for decades to come.
The City’s Transportation and Public Works Department identified emergency funds from its operating budget for this project. The Capital Delivery Services Department is managing the project through all phases of design, construction and inspection. Residents can visit PublicInput.com/WCannonBridge to learn more and connect with the project team.
