Since 1981, National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) has challenged the nation to remove barriers to justice for all crime victims. In 2025, NCVRW will be observed April 6–12 with the theme:
Connecting < KINSHIP > Healing
This year’s theme highlights the power of human connection in supporting survivors. By fostering bonds, communities can improve access to services, rights, and healing — where advocacy begins.
In alignment with this theme, the Austin Police Department's (APD) Victim Services Unit is emphasizing the importance of secure communication for victims and survivors. For individuals escaping domestic violence or human trafficking, an untraceable phone can serve as a crucial lifeline.
Since 2020, APD has partnered with the 911 Cell Phone Bank to provide these devices to those in need. In recognition of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the 911 Cell Phone Bank, together with APD, is launching a Phone Collection Drive. While the drive will begin in April, the department hopes to sustain these efforts throughout the year and inspire continued community involvement.
"We've seen firsthand how a simple phone can be a lifeline for someone escaping a dangerous situation," said Melissa Nachbaur, one of the many Supervisors for the Austin Police Department Victim Services Unit. "By donating a device you no longer use, you could be giving someone the chance to reach safety, find resources, or rebuild their life."
