Suspect (arrested): Shane James, White male, 34 years of age
On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at approximately 11:59 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to calls of a shooting in the 7300 block of Shadywood Drive. APD Officers arrived on scene a short time later and found Emmanuel Pop Ba on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds. Pop Ba was pronounced deceased on scene. Officers at the scene also located Sabrina Rahman on the porch of a nearby residence with apparent gunshot wounds. Rahman was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene. Over the course of the investigation, it was determined that the suspect, Shane James, shot and killed Emmanuel Pop Ba while stealing his vehicle. James then turned his attention to Rahman, who had witnessed the shooting. James shot and killed Rahman, narrowly missing her baby who was in a stroller with her. The suspect then left the scene in Pop Ba’s vehicle which was later recovered.
Later in the evening the suspect Shane James crashed a different murder victim’s vehicle and was taken into custody. He was in possession of a firearm.
James is charged with capital murder.
