On Sunday, September 29, 2024, at approximately 2:16 p.m., a 911 call was received reporting a man in the 500 block of West Cesar Chavez Street. The caller stated that the man was screaming and yelling, then crawled onto the bank and rolled into the water. The caller said he could hear the man screaming while swimming and punching the air, until he went underwater and failed to resurface.
The Austin Fire Department (AFD) and Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) responded and were able to locate and pull the subject out of the water. AFD/EMS attempted life saving measures but could not resuscitate him. A time of death was given at 3:11 p.m.
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview a witness. The witness stated he had observed the subject acting erratically while walking on the hike and bike trail. The subject was observed screaming, punching trees, and foaming at the mouth. He then saw the subject enter the water between the hike and bike trail and West Cesar Chavez Street, where prior to going underwater, he began swimming and continued to scream and punch.
