All adoption fees will be waived at Austin Animal Center on Saturday, April 1.
No joking around...this April Fools Day, Austin Animal Center is hosting an adoption event!
Adoption fees will be waived Saturday April 1 for all shelter animals.
From noon to 2 pm, adoptable dogs will be showcased on the Center's spacious front lawn. Volunteers and staff will be available to answer questions and help make matches. Austin Public Library representatives will have a table to sign up for a library card and check out their curated collection of books, ebooks, and audiobooks on pet care, training, and more.
Austin Animal Center currently has more than 330 medium/large dogs onsite, and over 20 dogs living in pop up crates.
Tips for a Successful Dog Adoption:
- Head straight home! While you may be excited to go to the nearest pet store to pick up supplies, or to your family's house to show off your new pup, remember that the dog has gone through a lot of change lately. The best thing for your dog is to head straight home to let both you settle in.
- Watch your dog closely. Close doors to bedrooms or use baby gates to prevent your new dog from having access to the whole house during the first week home. This will help you figure out what your new dog already knows and what you both need to work on. Always use a leash outside - even if you have a fenced yard, a leash helps until you're sure your new pup won't escape.
- Reward good behavior. Give your dog lots of praise, treats, or offer toys when your dog does things you like, such as sitting quietly by your side, coming to you when you call, or going potty outside.
- Give it time. As much as you want to hit the ground running with your new pal, your dog needs time to "decompress" from stressful shelter life. It takes time for your new pup to get the hang of your home, and for you to learn about your dog's likes and dislikes.
- Do slow introductions. Take your time introducing your new dog to other dogs or cats. Avoid dog parks. You want to set everyone up for success, so don't rush it. We can give you info on safe introductions!
