April Pool’s Day: Water Safety Awareness
April Pool’s Day, observed on April 1, serves as an annual reminder to prioritize water safety and drowning prevention. One of the best ways to stay safe in the water is to be a strong swimmer and to always swim in a lifeguarded pool.
Taking swim lessons and joining a swim team can reduce drowning risk by imparting essential water safety skills, building confidence, and improving swimming abilities. Strong swimming skills can reduce panic in emergencies, improve physical coordination, and even enhance cognitive development. For more information, visit AustinTexas.gov/Swimming.
“April Pool’s Day is a fun yet meaningful way to remind everyone about the importance of water safety when we're in or around the water,” said Jesús Aguirre, Austin Parks and Recreation Director. “Swimming in a lifeguarded pool helps ensure safety and reduces drowning risks. Swim lessons and joining a swim team equip swimmers with the skills to be safe, confident, and to enjoy the water responsibly.”
